When To Change Your Transmission Fluid | Springfield, IL
If you’ve taken your car in for an oil change, it’s likely you’ve been asked if you want to change your transmission fluid as well. So why is it important to change your transmission fluid, and when should you change it?
Your transmission fluid acts as a hydraulic fluid, as well as a lubricant and a coolant. If you don’t change it often enough, your transmission fluid will become contaminated with metal particles and begin to break down.
Transmission fluid change intervals can vary widely, but we recommend somewhere between 30,000-60,000 miles, or every two to four years. If you drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, use your Hyundai SUV to tow, or commute through heavy stop-and-go traffic, then you will need to change your oil on the lower side of that scale. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for the specific intervals recommended for your model and model year.
How do you know that it’s time to change your transmission fluid? Healthy transmission fluid is usually red, while contaminated transmission fluid is dark brown or black, and may give off a burning smell. You may also experience:
- Slipping gears
- Delay in shifting
- Difficulty shifting
- Grinding or squealing noises when shifting
If your vehicle is shifting improperly, it may also mean your vehicle is low on transmission fluid, so make sure to check your fluid levels and look for leaks regularly.
